Dr. Sammes joins the CSM faculty as the Herman F. Coors Distinguished Professor of Ceramic Engineering. His first position after receiving his Ph.D. was senior research scientist for ICI Chemicals and Polymers, Runcorn UK. At ICI, he patented a novel catalyst system for ammonia oxidation using an electrochemical reactor. He was then offered an appointment at the University of Waikato, New Zealand where he became the first Flectcher Challenge Endowed Chair in Fuel Cell Technology and the Founding Professor of the Department of Materials and Process Engineering. Dr. Sammes then moved to Acumentrics in Boston with his research group from New Zealand to become the Director of Fuel Cell Development. In 2002, he was offered the first UTC Endowed Chair in Fuel Cell Technology and Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the university. Dr. Sammes has published over 200 articles in the area of oxide materials and is currently Editor in Chief of the ASME Journal of Fuel Cell Science and Technology. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, UK, and a Charted Engineer. He is known for his work in the area of ionic and electrochemical properties of ceramic oxides with particular emphasis on solid oxide fuel cells.
