I am a graduating senior (May '08) in the Engineering Physics department at Mines and I am pursuing admission to the graduate program in Material Science for Fall 2008. I look forward to more involvement in fuel cell research. As an undergraduate, I work on a minor in Public Affairs through the McBride Honors program and conduct part-time research for a professor in the on-campus Colorado Center for Advanced Ceramics. I am drawn to Mines by its prestigious academic environment, the wealth of opportunity for personal and professional advancement, and proximity to the ski slopes. I am a native of Colorado and live with my family in Englewood during the holidays.
My research focuses on cathode performance in solid-oxide fuel cells. Through an independent senior design project, I work under Professor Neal Sullivan to measure the efficiency of SOFC cathodes using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy. Once a repeatable procedure has been developed, I will experiment with methods to improve SOFC power output, such as cathode composition, application procedure, and thickness. I hope to submit my results to the Journal of the Electrochemical Society.
